The Erasmus mobility program was launched by the European Union in 1987. Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Institute of History have been taking part in it ever since. Students have the opportunity to spend several months studying at a European partner institute. In return, the Ruhr-Universität accepts around 350 exchange students every year. Through the Erasmus program, RUB lecturers can spend up to six weeks teaching at a partner university (with at least eight hours of teaching per week). Students who receive a study place at an Erasmus partner institution are supported by the host universities in finding accommodation and organizing their studies. Depending on the local cost of living, they receive a monthly grant of between 200 and 400 euros. There are no tuition fees. A language test in the respective language of instruction must be completed before the start and after the end of the stay; however, it is only used for statistical purposes and plays no role in the allocation of a study place. The academic achievements are generally recognized by the Institute of History.
The Erasmus program is based on the partnerships of the Department of History, which are listed at the bottom of this page. All students of the Faculty of History can apply for the places regardless of their nationality. Studying at the partner university is legally only possible at the local history departments. Students from other RUB faculties can therefore only apply in exceptional cases. The RUB International Office provides general advice on the Erasmus program.
Advice at the Department of History is available during the office hours of the Erasmus representative, Dr. Lutz Budrass (Thurs. 10:15-12:15, GA 4/50, Tel.: 22554).
You can apply for places on the Erasmus program once a year for the following academic year. The application deadline is always the third Friday in February, 13:00. The application must be submitted by email (historicum@ruhr-uni-bochum.de) to the office of the Department of History. It must include the following:
1. The printout of the online application;
2. A current certificate of study and a transcript of records (eCampus printout);
3. A copy of the school leaving certificate;
4. A curriculum vitae in tabular form with a passport photo;
5. A brief justification of the desired course of study (max. 1 page).
It is important to complete the online application form in full and send it off. The generated pdf file must then be dated, signed and submitted digitally. At the beginning of March, the nominees will be notified by the office of the Department of History. A contract, the so-called Learning Agreement, is then concluded with the partner institute for each candidate. On the basis of the Learning Agreement, the Erasmus officer will recognize the achievements made abroad after the return.
The Historical Institute has numerous Erasmus agreements with international universities:
