Programs

In addition to the 2-subject Bachelor's degree programme, the Institute of History also offers a 2-subject and a 1-subject Master's degree programme. The Bochum-Tours course (Bachelor's and Master's degree) is aimed at students who wish to complete a ‘Licence’ in France at the same time as their degree in Germany. There are also other international and interdisciplinary degree programmes in which the History department is involved, as well as doctoral degree programmes.

The History degree programme is modularised. Great importance is attached to flexibility and a broad range of courses. As a rule, the courses in a module must be successfully completed within two semesters.

Like all students on the 2-subject Bachelor's degree programme, History students must attend a second subject as well as modules in the optional area.

Study certificate for a specialisation in Studies in Collective Violence, Holocaust and Genocide

The Faculty of History enables students to obtain a study certificate as part of their degree programme. The Collective Violence, Holocaust and Genocide Studies certificate is offered by the Institute for Diaspora and Genocide Studies (IDG). It indicates a thematic specialisation chosen by the student during their studies and can be acquired as part of the respective standard degree programme (BA and Master's phase). Students who take courses as part of their degree programme that are also covered by the module programme of the certificate programme can have the courses credited both in the standard degree programme and for the certificate.

The certified specialisation introduces students to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary questions on the causes, processes and consequences of collective politics of violence and experiences of violence. The academic examination of social forms of discrimination, exclusion and violence, the analysis of violent political conflicts, wars and genocide are intended to provide inspiration for research and practice. The programme is aimed at students with different interests in the fields of research, history education and teaching.
There are regular information events and counselling sessions.

Further information on the structure of the certificate programme can be found here: https://www.idg.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/zertifikatsstudium/index.html.en
