A doctorate serves the purpose of individual academic research and the in-depth examination of a historical problem. After successfully completing the Master's programme, you can be accepted as a doctoral candidate after submitting an application to the Department of History. The exact regulations and formalities are set out in the doctoral regulations of the Faculty of History.

As part of the RuhrCentre for American Studies, the Bochum doctoral programme for American Studies (Faculty of Philology and Faculty of History) cooperates with the doctoral programme for American Studies at TU Dortmund University (Faculty of Cultural Studies) and the doctoral programme for ‘Anglophone Studies’ at the University of Duisburg-Essen (Faculty of Humanities) to offer the structured doctoral programme.
Since the 2010/11 winter semester, the Faculty of History and the Faculty of Philology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum have been offering Germany's first doctoral programme in American Studies in the context of the UARuhr: ‘American Studies: Transnational/Transatlantic Studies’. The course is organised by the RuhrCenter of American Studies. Researchers from all over the world can apply for a place on the programme. In the three-year programme, doctoral students attend four seminars on theory and practice in Transnational/Transatlantic American Studies and take part in three research colloquia in which they present the progress of their work. Two accompanying practical courses can be chosen from areas such as university teaching, intercultural management, conference organisation or editing. A research stay in the USA will complement the courses in Bochum and Dortmund.
