The History Department is awarding a scholarship funded by the Erasmus+ program and the German Academic Exchange Service to master's students studying history at Central Michigan University (CMU) in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, USA. The scholarship is awarded for a period of four months, either in the fall semester of 2026 (end of August to mid-December) or in the spring semester of 2027 (beginning of January to beginning of May). It consists of €700 per month and an additional travel allowance of €820. The scholarship holder is treated the same as regular CMU students in terms of CMU services (accommodation, use of university facilities). At CMU, lectures and courses in history can be attended that are eligible for credit at the History Institute as advanced seminars, advanced seminars, or exercises for advanced students. It is not possible to take courses in a second subject. The scholarship holder will be granted leave of absence from RUB for the duration of the scholarship.

CMU is one of the largest universities in Michigan. The Department of History regularly offers courses on all periods of European history, as well as on the history of Latin America, Africa, and East Asia, environmental history, and public history. Teaching focuses primarily on the history of North America.

Applicants who will be in the master's phase when the scholarship begins, have a good academic record, are interested in North American history, and have very good English language skills can submit their applications for a scholarship by January 30, 2026, to the Erasmus representative of the History Department, Dr. Lutz Budrass - Lutz. Budrass@rub.de. The following documents must be submitted: an informal letter of application, a transcript of records as proof of academic performance to date, a copy of the B.A. certificate, if applicable, and a one-page letter explaining the motivation for studying at CMU. The selection will be made by a committee of the History Department after reviewing the application documents and, if necessary, interviewing the applicants.
