The Mediterranean research area is institutionally anchored in the interdisciplinary and cross-epochal Centre for Mediterranean Studies at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, which was financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research between 2010 and 2016. Through interdisciplinary cooperation, the Mediterranean-oriented research has developed a research profile that is characterised by approaches from the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences. In close cooperation with national and international research institutions, project proposals are developed in which the history and present of the Mediterranean region are examined from different perspectives. Currently, a special focus is on migration in the Mediterranean region and the development of social forms of organisation that can be observed along rivers and deltas.
