PhD thesis

It is generally possible to write a PhD thesis at the Department of History. Specific procedures are laid down in the PhD regulations of the Faculty of History. Adding to that, the department takes part in a joint PhD program concerning "American Studies: Transnational/Transatlantic Studies".

PhD Program American Studies: Transnational/Transatlantic Studies

In 2010 the PhD-program "American Studies: Transnational/Transatlantic Studies" commenced which is jointly organized by the Faculties of History and Philology of the Ruhr-University and the Faculty for Cultural Sciences of the University of Dortmund in the RuhrCenter of American Studies. The RuhrCenter of American Studies integrates the rich American Studies resources of Ruhr-University Bochum and TU Dortmund University. Our international PhD program is open to young scholars from around the world. Research at the RuhrCenter of American Studies has both a transnational and a transatlantic perspective; it focuses on American History, Literature, and Culture as nationally diverse and multi-ethnic as well as globally contextualized and interconnected. Over the course of the three-year program, doctoral students will take four seminars in the area theories and practices of Transnational/Transatlantic American Studies, participate in three research colloquia where they present their work in progress to peers and senior scholars, engage in two practically oriented skill courses in areas such as university level teaching, or intercultural management, organizing symposia and conferences, and editorial work. Courses at the RuhrCenter are complemented by a research stay at a US partner university.
